Hi Tiggy. I have pits under my sheds. They are the ordinary breeze blocks and are 3 bricks high/deep as the case may be. I used some old broken gravel boards for the bottom of the pits so the torts couldn't dig down and come up somewhere else.

I looked at your house Gail but I was.nt sure if they were concrete or not. Mine is going to be all breezebloch but the lad thats doing it wants to put concrete blocks under ground. they are 3 x's more expensive, The total cost being about £450. I let hubby look at your post and I told him Gail did that herself....tiggy :D

Tiggy, mine is normal breeze blocks too. My pit is just under 2ft deep and I have insulation on all 4 sides and chicken wire lining the bottom to stop them digging into the insulation :D

Hi Tiggy. Yes I did do it myself. because the garden is on a slope the boys pit is above ground but Tilly's is underground. Breeze Blocks are a lot easier to work with than ordinary bricks, so I am sure you and your husband are more than capable of building your own, if you have the time.

My builder used 2" thick polystyrene all way round with ply board over the top to protect it from torts sharp claws! The chicken wire is only on the bottom to stop them digging through and getting to insulation as well as to stop anything getting in. The breeze blocks seem absolutely fine, it really keeps the temps well, more often then not its warmer in there then in my house!!!! :D

Tiggy. Slabs will be fine to lay the blocks on. They will also stop the torts digging out the bottom. My pits aren't insulated at all, I assume the heat from the shed on top will help to keep the temperatures above freeing point during the winter. Tilly didn't dig all the way down, but she did dig in half her size, and she was fine.
