i picked up a new lady day before yesterday
here she is


she's not much of a looker


and she has a bumpy thing on her tail


any ideas what it is? i've never seen a prolapse, it looks like she's bursting for a poo


should i be worried?

ok here goes, ill stick my neck out.looking at her anal scutes she looks like a male.i cant really see what you mean on the tail.it is very under developed for a male but not unheard of.obviously you have the tortoise there in your hand so will know for certain that its a female .its just from the pictures something is not quite right.

the only way i can describe it is like she's bursting for a poo, the tail has a kink and there's also a lump on one side.
apparantly this tortoise has been used to laying eggs and is 20 yrs old

ok so that shoots me down in flames Sue.laying eggs is one of the more positive signs of being a female. im not sure about the tail though.the person i would ask should i see this in one of mine is Egyptiandan.he has a great deal of experience rehoming and rehabilitating poorly tortoises,and has a lot of knowledge with diseases and trauma injuries.

HAH! yes, I've just seen it!!!!! I automaticly reached for the salt pot too! Pesky things!

Oh, btw..... how can you say she's not much of a looker??? Bless her! We all have our faults ('specially Terry, but hey-ho!) but we are all beautiful in our own little way..... (well, ok, maybe Terry in his shorts is another story*... but!)

sue, thats not a prolapse, ive seen one of them and its a fleshy thing hanging out when its prolapsed.her tail looks like its had some sort of damage, like stood on or kicked. but she is a sweet little thing. i thought penny was'nt very nice looking when i brought her home but after a couple of days she grew on me. yours will do the same im sure..........tiggy
