Hi Amanda.

Welcome to tortoise Island. I personally have no idea on the identity of your tortoise. But I am sure somebody will be along soon too help you out.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but how long ago was it found? Have you notified the local vets and police that you have it, as it may be somebody's pet. Your local vet should be able to scan it to see if it is microchipped.

It certainly is a lovely looking little fellow. But I am inclined to think it is more of a turtle than a tortoise. But I may be completely wrong on that. Hang around and I am sure it won't be long before somebody comes along with an answer for you.

Gail
xx

It looks like a turtle? Red ear slider? You need Kirkie or Sandy as they both keep different species of turtles so may be able to help more? When did you (or your dog) find it? It looks a funny shape, though of course I could be insulting its natural shape

Hopefully someone else will be along shortly, bear with us....

Oh and welcome to our forum! Hope you stick around!!! :D :D :D :D :D

Thank you very much for your quick response, I just assumed it was a tortoise because I do not live near any water. I have looked on Craigslist.com to see if anyone had lost their pet, But I have not taken it to a vet yet because my husband is on a trip and I do not drive. My Dog found it this morning in our garden. I have given it some water, apples and broccoli and when my husband gets home we will have it scanned for a chip. If it does not have a chip, we are thinking we will keep it:)

I know, it does have a funny shape. It looks like its shell was stepped on, or run over.

thats why we need to get the little one identified so that it can have the right husbandry. I would be careful feeding it broccili & fruit as both are not good for the gut for most tortoises/turtles, try and find some dandylions in the garden if poss, hopefully we can get him/her id quickly for you. Are you able to put up some more pics? Maybe one of the underneath area including the tail (that way we can sex it for you) also maybe a close up of the head, the reason I said Red slider is cos it looks like it has red lines on his face? If it's a turtle then it probably came from someones garden on house? It could of course have been pinched (lots of that going on at mo :( ) and dumped or it could have been picked up by a bird from a garden pond. Its either been dropped or wandered into your garden, you were very lucky (or at least the turt/tort was!) that the dog didn't 'chew' it as they quite often see these as 'toys',

If you can, give it a bath, either put him in the sink or bath or if you have a bowl, fill it with warm water so that it comes up to the top of his legs where they meet the shell, and let him have a 20 min soak.
