Hi all

Well me and the OH have just booked our last holiday of the year. We are going away next week for 7 days. My daughter has wrote herself a very clear and precise care sheet on all the torts (not forgetting the dog) (and the incubating eggs) that she can follow while we are away. And I know that she will do her best to see that they are all cared for correctly.

My dilemma is, I soooo wanted to keep the hatchlings totally weed fed, but Kayleigh is worried about feeding the wrong ones. I don't want to put added pressure on her by expecting her to go out weed identifying and picking. Will they be ok just for the week if we buy the floretti salad and then gradually swap them back after? Or has anybody had success in freezing weeds that can be defrosted and fed successfully without going black and sloppy?

Gail
xx

gail what you can do is pick a big bag full soak them then just shake off the surplus water.they will last about a week bagged in the fridge. even if your daughter only feeds them to the hatchlings and gives the others a mix, with what is surplus.you dont want the little ones getting any bad habits.
just a thought your daughter can give us a shout here Gail any problems or even just to id a weed.

Thanks Terry, I never thought of that. I will have to go longer walks and find the freshest newest leaves. But have to say the council have strimmed one of my favourite patches, (bless em) so am looking for a new one at the moment. I can still manage to find, dandelion, plantain, the purple clover, sow thistle and broad leaf plantain. So we are doing quite well at the moment. Oh and not forgetting chick weed.

Gail, I have found that if I put weeds in water, like you do with flowers they stay fresh, but you do get some strange looks from visitors if you have a vase of dandies on the window sill. :D I also get the sympathetic look when I say my OH picked them for me
My torts are a fussy lot and they like their weeds room temperature!!

I picked 2 (yes 2!!!) carrier bags full of weeds last week and wet them then put them in the fridge and they are still fresh now. They don't freeze unfortunatly - all you end up with is a gooey smelly mushy mess when they defrost!!! Not nice! Give Kayleigh my mobile no, she knows me well enough now, or as Terry said, get her to log on here, there's usually soemone around.....the other option of course, is if you're that worried.....cancel your holiday!

Well just in case I've missed anybody off the thank you button, i thought I'd thank you on here too. Luckily we are off work the week before we go away, so I can suss out a good spot during the week while out with the dog and then sneak off the day before we fly and stock up.

Dawn, I have played my face so much over this holiday I just couldn't back out now. Neil would go mad. lol. But it was only after we booked that the worries started creeping in. Up until we'd booked I kept thinking Yes they'll all be fine. Now I keep thinking, I hope they'll all be fine. LOL. But I'm sure they will be, with you and everyone looking out for Kayleigh's posts if there is a problem.

Thankyou all very much, for being here.

Gail
