For weeks I have been building myself up to take Legs 11 to the vets for a check up. He really has slowed down, and I was worried it was because I wasn't getting enough food into him, and that he was giving up. I was so worried the vet would tell me that he was suffering in some way and that his future was bleak. He hadn't lost any weight and his eyes were clear, mouth a nice pink colour, but I was still worried about the outcome.

So yesterday morning we took him over to Telford and we saw Hannah Bould. She was really surprised and pleased at just how healthy he is. She said he had a good fat store on him, he is well hydrated, and for his size his weight is fine. She checked his eye sight and said, although one eye has poor sight, the other one is fine. His beak was a bit overgrown and rubbery on the end, so she has trimmed it to stimulate growth and strength. All the time, Legs 11 was hissing and biting her. Hannah said he is more than capable of eating on his own and that I need to be a bit more strict with him, and try to leave him a couple of days without food, so that he is hungry and attempts to eat it on his own. She gave me some calcium in liquid form to put on his food, just to ensure he is getting enough. So I am really happy with him. I just got to try not to be so ready to feed him. Easier said than done I know. But it will be a bit easier, knowing that he is capable of eating on his own. He now just has to learn how to do it.

Hello Gail, it is good to know Legs is well, comforting to have the health check and your worst fears are unfounded. It is hard to make the decision to bother the vet as you don't want to come over as wasting time. Sometimes I arrive at the vets knowing exactly what I am going to say only to hear myself making excuses for being there. I wish I could say something on the lines of ' just have a look and tell me what you think'!!! What I am learning is when in doubt or something doesn't seem as right as it has been... Go visit the expert.... Loosing Michelle has taught me that harsh lesson x x. Hugs x x

That is wonderful news.. Good on you legs 11!!! But how can you not help him feed? it breaks my heart when I see Pepsi totally missing her food, her mouth open biting in the air.. But the vet is right sometimes we have to be cruel to be kind :( It's just the cruel bit I can't do

Hope he continues getting big & strong and please keep us updated..

Still no sign of him eating on his own. We are doing a battle of wills. And Legs is winning hands down. He does look a lot better now his mouth has been clipped. And I will post pictures as soon as I get chance.

Thank you for all your comments.
