Today one off the eggs from the first clutch exploded,i got it out straight away and it smelt terrible,it looked like the yolk was hard like a poached egg,the other two eggs on the first clutch are on day 106,what could have caused this to happen.

Sorry to hear this has happened - I know from experience its an awful smell!!!

The egg was clearly infertile and like any egg, being exposed to constant heat just causes it to go rotten resulting in the horrible explosive mess that you had. Make sure you clean any area that the egg innards have come into contact with as there is an increased risk of salmonela. I was really unlucky as mine exploded near the kitchen sink and I had to scrub down the sink, worktop, walls, window and floor!!! I was up all night and had to go to bed leaving the back door open cos of the smell!!!!

A good tip I was given is to lay a bit of kitchen roll over the top of the eggs once they go past the due date, that way if they do explode the kitchen roll will hopefully prevent the mess from going everywhere - unfortunatley it wont stop the smell though!!!

oh jayne thats a shame, its sad when you have high hopes for your eggs thet one explodes. do you know if the others are fertile?I hope you have better luck with the rest.....tiggy

Thanks for the tip Dawn,i have just noticed a crack in one off the eggs in the second clutch which are on day 80.

How awful for you Jayne When you say crack, do you mean pipped? I hope the others are ok for you..

The egg has a crack down the one side and the top of the shell looks like a layer as gone,not building any hopes up,i will let you know what happens.
Jeanette,i have only ever been on face book once and my hubby moaned like crazy so i never go on,so not me.
